The story of radon goes back as far as the last Glacial Ice Age. Several million years ago glaciers covered the land that most of us call home today. Contained within these glaciers were several minerals and elements. As the glaciers receded, these elements were left behind and settled in our soil. One of the elements that was left in our soil was Uranium 238. Over time, Uranium 238 decomposes and emits a by-product that we know as radon gas. Radon is a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas that is found in the soil under our homes and buildings. It seeps up from the ground through the basement, crawl space, floor or slab on grade. When we breathe this gas into our lungs for prolonged periods of time, it can cause cancer cells to form. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers in the United States according to the American Medical Association, The US EPA, the Surgeon General of the United States and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Long term exposure to elevated levels of radon increases the risk of acquiring a radon induced lung cancer.
